The Existential Adventures of Tim Maia

David Byrne’s iconic NYC based record label, Luaka Bop asked us to create excitement for their album ’The Existential Soul of Tim Maia’. The task was to generate hype and sales in a declining industry for an artist practically unknown outside of Brazil.

THINKING

Back in 70s Brazil, Tim Maia was a living legend as infamous for his crazy lifestyle as his music. We decided against creating the usual music video for an album track and instead gave him the introduction he deserves…

THE IDEA

We created a short animated biography of Tim’s wildly colourful life, narrated to a choice selection of tracks from the album.
Illustrators Momo and Sprits were drafted in to bring Tim’s big and bouncy world of sun drenched soul music to life. For the voice over, world famous South American folk singer, Devendra Banhart, stepped in to tell the story.

“A short cartoon masterpiece. A story so crazy it nearly overwhelmed his notable career.”

RESULTS

The film has been viewed over hundreds of thousands of times and to this day is still getting a large Brazilian following. It has also been honoured as a Vimeo Staff Pick, featured on the front pages of Daily Motion in the USA, China and Japan, as well as being aired on TV in Portugal and Brazil. It has revived Tim Maia’s infamous legend.
